What it is
The summer Milky Way rising over a still lake on a July night. The bright, dusty band is our own galaxy seen edge-on from inside, and its brightest part, low over the horizon, looks towards the galaxy's centre in Sagittarius, about 26,000 light-years away.
How it was made
A panorama of several frames, each a 20-second exposure with a 14 mm lens wide open. The calm water holds a reflection of the brightest stars, and the dark lanes in the band are clouds of dust that block the starlight behind them.
