What it is
The core of the Milky Way, framed by a gap in the trees. This is the view towards the centre of our galaxy, in Sagittarius and Scorpius, where the stars are packed most densely.
What you can see
The dark lanes are clouds of dust that block the light of the stars behind them. The small pink glows are clouds of hydrogen where new stars are forming, such as the Lagoon Nebula.
